Belfast has a chequered history thanks to years of 'the troubles'. Although this has, in some ways, caused massive segregation, it has in other ways brought the 'wartime spirit' - where everyone pulls together and causes great relationships to flourish.
On the other hand, there has been great division between 'sides'. Businesses have been unwilling to do business with people and people have been unwilling to do business with them. Taxis won't go in to certain areas as is the same with Belfast driving instructors, Belfast milk men and coal men. In some cases (thankfully much less now) it could have been fatal to stray into the wrong area to do your business.
